"Astronaute maya" / "Mayan Astronaut"

Pakal, the great Mayan king.

He was buried with a beautiful mask made of pieces of jade, a material associated with the eternity of the soul due to its hardness and longevity. Born in 603, between 615 and 683 he was ruler of the city-state of Baakal, whose main ruins we now call Palenque. The discovery of his tomb opened a bright door to the research of iconography and epigraphy of the Classic Mayan period (200-900 AD).

The world knew that the Mayans buried their kings inside the pyramids, like the Egyptians. And that these underground chambers represented the underworld, the realm of the dead, which in some regions and in the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Mayans, was called Xibalba.
